Here at DD we are very excited to be one of the first stockists of the brand-new-to-the-market Van Howick drum sticks. Available in a funky range of colours and grades (currently available in oak) these eye-catching sticks are both fun and affordable. I gave each type a test-run and will review them in this blog. Overall, although the coloured coating has a different "feel" to a natural stick (I usually use Vic Firth 5As), it actually gives an enhanced grip, which is one of many positive features of these sticks. ![]() 5A - Purple No heavier than other 5As, despite being made of oak, this stick has a good natural rebound and good grip. ![]() 7A - Pink These are a short-tapered, light stick that would be perfect for a smaller or younger player. ![]() 5B - Dark Blue These are my choice of stick from the Van Howick range. Very beefy, lots of stick heft but comfy! A very nice taper giving great accuracy in a bigger stick. ![]() 2B - Light Blue These deserve a special mention for being "Dave's Drums" blue, the same colour as our logo! Not the longest feeling stick, but very loud with a fair amount of forward weight. ![]() Jazz - Turquoise Surprisingly large grip for a jazz model, a short taper keeps the weight forward on these sticks and the small tip gives good definition. ![]() Rock - Green A large stick with good heftiness but not too much weight. Loud and direct, but not just a sledgehammer! ![]() SD2 - Yellow A large grip with a very short taper to a small bead tip. Great snare stick. ![]() SD3 - Light Orange "5A" style grip but with a bit more weight from the shorter taper. Perfect "fusion" style stick. ![]() SD4 - Dark Orange A 5B feel with more forward weight and great articulation from the small tip. In conclusion, I am very impressed with these sticks.
